Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk had some kind words for his Scotland team-mate after their opening night heartbreak.
Hosts Germany opened the tournament on Friday night as they looked to get their campaign off without a hitch at home in Munich against Scotland, and with it being a full house.
Florian Wirtz scored after just 10 minutes to set Germany on their way, with Jamal Musiala soon after putting the hosts in control.
Any chance Scotland had of staging a comeback was extinguished when Ryan Porteous fouled in the box and received his marching orders just before half-time, with Kai Havertz dispatching the penalty.
Goals from Niclas Fullkrug and Emre Can scored a goal of their own as they made it five but Scotland did pull one back in the last minute through an Antonio Rudiger own-goal.
Not surprisingly, for an underwhelming display there was the customary fallout from Scotland with much of it directed at Andy Robertson.
Liverpool colleague Virgil van Dijk passed on a message of support to Robertson ahead of his nation’s match against Poland Saturday afternoon.
He was unimpressed with Reece James’ handball that led to Chelsea’s penalty equaliser and felt Robertson had a legitimate claim for a spot-kick after going down under Ben Chilwell’s challenge in the box, ruled out by VAR because he was offside at U18s level. These things are never easy to deal with but I am more than confident that he will bounce back and take the Scottish nation forward to great days.
The Scots play Switzerland on Wednesday night. Since Swiss won there last game 3-1 in current rank second team of the group.
