Guenther Steiner whipped Kevin Magnussen’s Formula 1 career back into life, though the former Haas team principal believes his favourite Dane isn’t the only long-term driver ripe for replacing. This season, the 31-year-old scored five points in 12 races, just 22 behind Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg, who is set for Sauber next year.
Hulkenberg finished sixth in the previous two races. Guenther told the press at a Buffalo Trace bourbon promotional event: “I love Kevin, and I love Kevin as a person, and we have a good relationship, but what he is doing the last races against Hulkenberg is just not great, I would say.
We need to be open about that. Either Hulkenberg is so good which we didn’t know about, or Kevin is just at the moment not up to where he needs to be to have a seat in F1. There is this time when you need to realise.”
