The reigning champion took Alcaraz to five pulsating sets last year at Roland Garros but Sunday’s blockbuster rematch was the exact opposite after the Spaniard shredded 37-year-old Federer and secured a 6-2, 6-2,7-6 (4) victory before valiantly defending his title with four majors in total.
“He deserved this win today. He was just the better player on the court, from the beginning to end”I mean he deserved it,” Djokovic told reporters.
I fought in the third to try and come back, saved three match points to prolongt reallying it a little bit. But I suppose that he was meant to snatch a victory today, because quality-wise tennis on his side of the court.
“It’s as simple as it is.”
For Djokovic to even be in the final was remarkable, given he had surgery on a torn meniscus only five weeks ago.
Wearing a brace on his right knee, the Serb beat back all challengers at Wimbledon during fortnight but came up short in pursuit of Roger Federer’s record eight titles when he finally encountered someone playing better than him.
