Chelsea women have named former Lyon boss Sonia Bompastor as new head coach on a four-year contract, the European champions announced Wednesday.
The 43-year-old takes over from Emma Hayes, who won a total of 14 major honours in her time at the club spanning more than a decade.
In France, Bompastor has been equally successful with Lyon winning a total of nine trophies in three seasons starting 2009.
Bompastor said in a club statement: “I will give my maximum to this new project, with the ambition of representing the emotion and desire shared by Club management, staff and players.
I aspire to be worthy of her legacy and carry on the work that has been done in recent years. Let the adventure begin.”
Earlier this month, on the final day of the English season, Hayes signed off in style by winning a fifth successive title with Chelsea before heading back to California as coach of the USA women’s national team.
Bompastor misses out on fairytale finale in Lyon after defeats to Barcelona the weekend before last and their 2-0 Champions League final loss.
