Bayern Munich appointed Vincent Kompany as the new coach of the German giants on a three-year-contract Wednesday in a surprise move.

The former Manchester City captain Kompany, 38, has taken charge at Bayern despite his new club having suffered relegation in the Premier League with Burnley this season.

Looking forward to the challenge of FC Bayern. FC Bayern is a great honour for me; it was an institution in international football,” added Kompany.

“Now I just want to focus on the essentials, working with players and building a team. If you get the basis right, success will follow.

With that hiring Bayern solved their search for a new manager after Thomas Tuchel left the club following his first season without winning any silverware in 12 years.

Tuchel was informed in February that he would be leaving at the end of the season following Bayern slipping six points off eventual Bunaliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

According to Heuser, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso was up for the challenge and indeed Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann would have also been keen on swapping international management in order to take over from George Graham in Bavaria while interest shown by Austria manager Ralf Rangnick failed.

Kompany took charge at Burnley in July 2022 and earned promotion from the second-tier Championship with them this season.

They found the going tough in the jump to Premier League, winning only five games and taking 24 points- a record low top-flight tally for the Club.

Nonetheless, Kompany had the support of his former Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola who told his old club to target a move for the Belg.

„Vincent Kompany ist ein Trainer-Typ der sehr gut zur Spiel“-Philosophie und Identität des FC Bayern passt“, wird Sportdirektor Christoph Freund in einer FCB-Pressemitteilung zitiert.

“Great, young, very ambitious coach with a lot of international experience.

“Especially he his finger on the pulse when it comes to the players and what is needed in terms of performance out there. He definitely can and will provide us many.

When asked by German outlet SportBild if Kompany could land on the touchline at Bayern, Rummenigge admitted that such an appointment would have its benefits – in part because of his Bundesliga experience (from when he played an early career spell at Hamburg) and other attributes:

They are to pay their Premier League rivals Burnley £10 million ($13 m) in compensation for the right to hire his services.

“Even though we have been deep in discussions and are working through course of action options, it is a boom for us that even made as difficult potential to keep our manager,” Burnley said.

“Clearly we recognise the reputation of Bayern Munich and think Vincent is attracted to this potential opportunity too.
