Formula One world champions Red Bull revealed their new RB17 Hypercar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Friday with team boss Christian Horner hailing it a showcase for departing designer Adrian Newey’s ‘greatest hits package.’
The programme is limited to 50 cars: they’re all spoken for, at nearly six million pounds (or the equivalent of $7.77 million on current exchange rates) a pop and production will take three years starting now; these are track-only machines intended with designs upwards through speeds above 350kph but probably not entire races without support from their technicians.
Red Bull aims to win a maiden title in its own right with the two-seater, which will be based on Red Bull’s 20 years in Formula One that has seven drivers’ crowns and six constructors’ titles won — the last three achieved by Max Verstappen built for Newey.
In the media he said: “This car is really Adrian’s utopia, it is him unleashed.” The most extreme track car ever.
There are no FIA restrictions, cost cap. This is cherry-picked from every car he’s ever driven… all the stuff they (Formula One) took away.
It’s a celebration now of Adrian and his time with the team.
Newey, 65, is already considered one of the all-time great designers in a sport where competitive teams — notably Ferrari and Aston Martin — have sought to lure him away even since his signing-off from F1 was announced.
He wouldn’t mention in-country destinations next season and declined to do so on Friday.
