Brazil are a long way from the finished article and have plenty of room for improvement after Saturday’s Copa America quarter-final defeat to Uruguay, coach Dorival Jr has said as they prepare for their next assignment, World Cup qualifiers.
Uruguay, managed by former Argentina boss Marcelo Bielsa were down to 10 men in the second half but held Brazil at bay for a goalless draw after extra-time on Saturday with Peru winning through a unique penalty shootout so memorable that their semi-final against Colombia six days later would simply be its bizarre epilogue.
There was not much to admire from Brazil in the tournament, they drew twice 0-0 and then only beat Paraguay (1-3) before succumbing for second consecutive time at a quarter-final of massive event since Qatar WC.

Dorival, who had only taken the national team job in January, also spoke on that 1957 Uruguay team managed by Bielsa and deemed it a squad Brazil could be as after all an Argentine has imposed his philosophy upon their side.
I believe that the Uruguayan national team has a scheme, very well defined. They had been a team for a long time. They went through some adversities and they fixed them, – Dorival said.
And now they are getting fantastic outcomes. I can assure that we’ll fulfill all of those too, without any question at all… just takes time to make such alterations.
There were some problems in the opening match of the tournament. They put us last, so it was always going to be difficult but that being said I think we corrected a lot of mistakes and as well its been tricky with the time frame we had to try speed up process. I believe we have some future time to spend together.
